This mesmerizing 7-day from Marrakech Morocco tour offers an in-depth exploration of the Sahara Desert. Starting in Marrakech, you’ll journey south through the High Atlas Mountains, arriving at the awe-inspiring Sahara region in Morocco. After exploring Ouarzazate, known as the “Gateway to the Sahara,” you’ll venture towards the Algerian border to reach the Erg Chebbi dunes near the village of Merzouga. On your return journey to Marrakech, you’ll visit the stunning Todra Gorges, the Skoura Oasis, and Ouarzazate.
This Morocco tour provides an alternative to the 5-day Merzouga desert circuit and the Zagora desert circuit. The village of Merzouga is situated at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes, south of Errachidia. During this desert circuit, you’ll also traverse the Atlas Mountains to Aït Ben Haddou, an incredible location.
Itinerary:
Day 1 – Marrakech Airport
- Arrival in Marrakech. Transfer to the hotel.
- Option to stay in a 4-star hotel or a riad.
- Explore the ancient Medina of Marrakech, activating your senses in this new world.
Day 2 – Marrakech – Telouet – Aït Benhaddou – Ouarzazate
- Depart early from Marrakech, heading to Aït Benhaddou (UNESCO World Heritage site) via the Ounila Valley.
- Visit the Ksar of Aït Benhaddou, which has served as a backdrop for movies like “Gladiator” and “Lawrence of Arabia.”
- Explore Ouarzazate, a region full of tourist attractions in the Atlas Mountains.
Day 3 – Ouarzazate – Agdz – Draa Valley – Nkob – Alnif – Rissani – Merzouga
- The journey from Ouarzazate to the Draa Valley is breathtaking, passing through rivers, palm groves, mountains, kasbahs, and fortified villages.
- Arrive in the desert by evening. The Erg Chebbi dunes await, known as the Merzouga dunes.
- These dunes stretch for 22 km from north to south and are up to 5 km wide, characterized by their stunning shades of orange.
Day 4 – Erg Chebbi
- The rocky tracks surrounding the Erg Chebbi dunes and Merzouga are ideal for exploring the desert, oases, and palm groves.
- Don’t miss the cultural village of Khamlia, home to Gnawa musicians and dancers, descendants of sub-Saharan ancestors.
Day 5 – Merzouga – Todra Gorges – Dadès Valley
- Todra Gorges are Morocco’s most famous canyons, with roads passing alongside a river in gorges that are 300m deep and 20 to 50 meters wide.
- Arrive in the Dadès Valley by evening, a region known for its kasbahs, oases, and canyons.
Day 6 – Dadès Valley – Skoura – Ouarzazate – Marrakech
- A promising day begins, starting with the charming Skoura oasis, its refreshing palm grove, and traditional architecture.
- Ouarzazate, located in the Atlas Mountains, offers attractive places to visit. You can explore oases, kasbahs, or do some last-minute shopping.
- Overnight in Marrakech.
Day 7 – Marrakech Airport
- Transfer from the hotel to Marrakech Airport.
